Google Earth Web: CHIC 102

Welcome to Professor Nez's students!

This section of my Google Earth Web instruction guide is for resources specific to students enrolled in sections taught by Professor Ana Nez, who are working with Digital Scholarship Librarian Colleen Greene. These resources are in addition to those covered throughout the rest of this guide.

Project Assignment

Team Research Presentation using Google Earth

In teams of three, students will select a research topic centered on a social justice issue that directly impacts BIPOC communities. Your presentation may focus on a historical or current event, an activist or a community organization or group. After developing a focused research question, students will conduct collaborative academic research and develop individual annotated bibliographies.

Your team presentation will be approximately 15 minutes in length. You will use Google Earth Presentation as your visual aid. Any quote, fact, statistic, image and / or idea that is taken from an outside source and incorporated in your presentation must be cited orally and listed in a Works Cited List.

Library Instruction Session Template

This link takes you to a Google Docs-based story planning document that students attending CHIC 102 sessions with Colleen Greene can use as a template and as sandbox content for the hands-on activities in our Google Earth Web workshops. Your professor will provide you with an official template for your class project.

Instruction Example

In designing their presentations, students might want to refer back to this example digital story that we looked at in class. In particular, pay attention to:

  • how the title slide is designed
  • how sources are cited and/or attributed throughout the presentation
  • how the works cited list at the end is designed.

Using the Google Earth Web Editor

The Google Earth Web editing interface underwent a redesign in 2024. This short 8-1/2 minute video tutorial (24) created by a University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) student demonstrates how to create a Google Earth Web project using the most current version.

MLA Citation Style

Professor Nez's classes use the MLA citation style.
