Historical GIS & Geospatial Analysis: Downloadable Georeferenced Historical Maps

Introduction

Downloadable Georeferenced Historical Maps

Georeferenced maps are digital maps – whether born-digital or digitized – that are tied to geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) on the surface of the Earth. When georeferenced maps are downloadable, they can imported into GIS (Geographic Information System) software such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, web mapping systems such as ArcGIS Online and QGIS2Web, and Google Earth Pro software.

Why Use Georeferenced Historical Maps?

Georeferenced maps can be overlaid on top of a basemap or other georeferenced maps. This method is useful for comparing and analyzing changes to places over time, such as: urban development of a community, rearranged or renamed street names, or communities displaced through eminent domain.
