1 --  Find a partner.

2 -- Complete the Spark Your Research tutorial. Please click on the box for Latino immigration to the New South.

​The tutorial will guide you through the research process:

  • Find background information 
  • Generate keywords 
  • Practice finding scholarly sources using a library database (Academic Search Premier)

3 -- Repeat the same search strategy in Google Scholar. (There is a link to Google Scholar below Academic Search Premier in the tutorial).

4 -- Post 1 citation in MLA format for: 1 article, book or book chapter your team found in Academic Search Premier or Google Scholar in your class Padlet, below. It must be from scholarly source. (Ask if your group is unsure.)

TASK:    You are doing research about illegal immigration and you need to find out how many undocumented persons are in the United States.   The class will be divided into groups of 2 or 3 people and each group will be assigned one of the resources listed below.

Consider the following questions:

  1. Was it possible to find an answer to this question using this database, web site or search engine?
  2. What steps did you take to find it?
  3. Can you identify the source of the data provided?
  4. How old is the information that you found?
  5. Who or what organization sponsored the data collection, website, or publication?
  6. How might their mission, goals, or ideology influence the calculation of the total in question?
  7. Did you find the information credible?
