Voter & Election Information: Understand the Issues

General resource guide to researching ballot issues, candidates, finding official non-partisan voter information, and more.

Endorsements & Media Reporting

To find candidate endorsements and identify organizations supporting or opposing propositions, you may need to use a combination of sources. See some examples below:

  • Trusted nonpartisan websites like those listed on the Ballot Information tab may include endorsements.
  • Most candidates maintain an endorsements page on their official websites and may mention endorsements on social media.
  • Check common endorsers such as newspapers / media outlets, labor unions, political organizations, local political party chaptersadvocacy groups, and professional associations that matter to you. If you are hitting paywalls online, remember the library offers access to many major news organizations to students, faculty, and staff.
  • If you are new to an issue or need background information, consider using OneSearch or the resources on the Background tab to locate additional reference material (encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs) on the issue or candidate.
  • If you want to consider media bias, websites such as AllSides.com provide charts, bias ratings, and additional information to better understand the publications you consult. The Duke Reporters' Lab also maintains a database of global fact-checking sites.
