Purpose of Copyright

Copyright is codified in Title 17 of the US Code where Congress has established the law and continues to refine it as needed.  Congressional authority to administer the law comes directly from Article I of the United States Constitution:

The Congress shall have Power…To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Tımes to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.

- United States Constitution, Article i, Section 8
